Barbas- A Daedras Best Friend- Lost

So, I was doing this quest and after finishing the first half, where I encountered Clavicus, I didn't wish to continue and therefore dismissed Barbas in Falreath (whatever its called). He has since disapeared? anyone know if he returns somewhere?

You probably meet him where you are supposed to get the axe
