Exclamation Dead Island Has Stopped Working

For the past 3 hours I have been looking for solutions; All information has led me to believe that my save file is corrupt and nothing will fix it.

Character is still there on the character screen. Clicking Play brings up the loading "Resort" screen. 25 seconds (full load is approximately 33seconds) in the window minimizes and "Has stopped Working".

In the event my character cannot be recovered (likely) are there any mods/programs out there that will autolevel a character to a certain level, and an inventory editor for items?

Normally I stay away from things like this; however I put 45 hours into this character (not including 4 hours from the day 1 patch fiasco), and I had achieved level 43, all collectibles roughly 97% blueprints, all dev weapons, 3/4 legendary inventory, 260% campaign completion, among many other things...

I just want to finish out my character.

Anyone have a fix, similar issues, or link(s) to the applications/programs I'm looking for?

Do you have any backup save? Again and again I have told people what really should have been obvious: it's vital to backup your save when a game uses single checkpoint for saving the game.

Yep, nope. I failed yet again. It usually takes me 1 issue per game to realize I need to manually back up my saves.

I really don't understand why companies can't implement an auto back up feature... I can't quite remember which recent game did it, it was one of the cheap ones $5-15, but if they can with such an inexpensive game, why can't a full retail game do so?

I created a new character.
I modded the character xp to get my level back.
I modded the shops to get my items back.
I'm running around recollecting the important skulls/blueprints/weapon mods (though someone may have just created an easier way to get these back via loot containers).

First three steps took about an hour.

OH! and I'm backing-up the out of my saves.

doesn't backing up the save still makes it corrupt if you try to use it? i did a test, copied the entire out folder and tried to use the copy but when i try to load the game its corrupted.

you have to do a workaround with steam cloud... there's a post around here detailing what you must do (in the disappearing save topic, wherever that went).

Ahh yeah I guess thats the only thing left

How did you mod your character xp, and shops though? I have no experience whatsoever in modding, but Dead Island seems a bit simpler than other games

odd, one moment... unintuitive forum coding, have to click the button to link apparently :P I'll go find the pages again.

How to Mod

What to Mod: Levels (You'll want to focus on "XXX_levels.xml")

What to Mod: Shops

Fixed linkage, deleting other post.

Ususaaly one of several things happen that can cause this.....(not saying you did this, but info for others.

Now assuming there is not a bug that crashes game saves or settings.....

1st, this is steam, go to the library, right click on the properties and have Steam check the game files, it will DL any corrupt files and you should be able to pick up where you left off....

2nd, this is a common occurrance if you install a mod.....

3rd, also a common occurrance if you try to tinker with the game files....

In the last 2 instances, you are basically screwed and will have to restart the game.

The issue is in the coding of the game. It commonly occurs when you join a coop game, progress a bit, and then load your last save (manually, or by clicking "play" next time you wish to play the game)

From what I've seen the game tries loading a region your character isn't in, and something goes awry.

Also, not common when using mods or tinkering with the game.

I have had no such issues after having done both.
