Question Cannot Add Friends with Free Account

I got a friend set up with a free copy of TF2 and a new steam account. It will not let him add any friends because it says he needs to have games installed in order for this feature to be available.

With steam introducing F2P games, can this be lifted or at least give them a friend limit of say 5?

Wow, when did they introduce this? I got a friend to sign up for Steam about a year or so ago who didn't own any games at all, and he was able to add and talk to friends.

This is intentional and has been standard procedure for quite a long time now. It is necessary to combat scammers operating on the friends network.

It's to stop people starting new accounts to phish people.

I believe that you could add him as a friend, it's just that he can't initiate it. You can also get rid of the restriction by funding his Steam Wallet, and buying some stuff in the TF2 store.

Nope, friends cannot be added either by invite or sending a request. I understand the abuse thing though. Stinks that a person with only a Free 2 Play game cannot auto join the Team Fortress server I am in by right-clicking my name, but I would rather have less abuse on the community system because of it.

they should change it so that free accounts can only accept friend requests. that way scammers can't scam but friends are forever

You can look at some of the specifics that free accounts can/cannot do here.

Thank you for the link. It's funny that it says you can request invites but cannot accept them. I would think for security this would be the other way around. It sounds safer to not let new accounts send out friend requests rather than not let them accept them.

I thought I tried sending out requests, but I'll try it again.

Just have him buy something from the Mann Co Store. Or, in case you haven't noticed, there's a major summer sale going on with great games that are dirt cheap.

Aren't there some items for 99 cents or similar in the TF2 store? That should be enough to lift those limitations, it would also mean that he would never get kicked from one of the anti-F2P-plugin-servers.

I found a sale item in the store for $.49. But yea, I am really that cheap. If it were Christmas maybe I'd buy it for him, but I am an Accountant. I'd rather spend 3 hours finding a legit free way to do it then spend $.49 .

Besides, how can I be sure that a $.49 really does fix the issue. I would hate to spend the money and still have the problem. That would like end the world or something.

Some guy was a F2P player, and the only way I could invite him to the game was to send him a friend invite.

I think premiums can send invites to Free Accounts.
