"Error: Failed to create key"
I finished installing the basic Steam program, but when i try to start it up for the update process i get an "Error: failed to create key", and the program closes itself.
Any ideas? |

Reinstall Steam. (Run a registry cleaner in between uninstall and reinstall if you want, I'd advise that you do)

I'm having the same problem, except mine will update to 26% before the error comes up. I've tried uninstalling steam, registry cleaning, reinstalling, repairing, deleting registry entries. the only thing I haven't tried is a full re-install of windows.

Make sure you run Steam as administrator. May be relevant.

fixed it!
I had to manually assign my account as the owner of the HKCU/software/valve key (regedit). Then assign myself full-control of it. Then I had to do the same exact thing for the HKCU/software/valve/steam key. |
