where on earth is clipboard once its copied

.....you press Ctrl-V then it pastes it.

were you expecting a real clipboard window to appear? Clipboard is used metaphorically.

so when product key comes up and i press copy to clipboard what does it do just copy it so i can paste

That is correct. Also, you can write it down on a piece of paper if you want.

Wow. You're new in Windows, right?

The clipboard used to have an actual window, now I don't think it does. Still, "Copy to clipboard" has been an expression at least since Windows 3.1, the first I ever used.
